Michelle Cai
What technology project(s) have you worked on that you are most proud of?:

I’d say I just recently dipped my toes into utilizing technology in my work. Earlier this year, I’ve started learning how to use R (programming) and have completed a few data analysis, but nothing too complicated. I intend to continue building my skills and utilizing R on upcoming QI projects.

How has technology helped you achieve a goal within your role or department?:

I joined DHM about 2 months ago, and I’ve just settled into my role as the QI Specialist. I hope with time I’ll get familiar with the complex challenges faced in our health system and learn to help find technological solutions to address some. I am currently supporting a telemedicine project where we use Zoom to connect family members with our medical team to discuss a patient’s care plan. We are still prototyping the program, but so far I’ve seen the positive impact and benefit this service has on patients and families.

What’s your favorite aspect of your role at UCSF and why?:

So far I’ve had the amazing opportunity to shadow some of our incredible hospitalists on different services to observe and ask questions about patient care and experience. I intend to use this knowledge for upcoming QI projects that I’ll be working on.

What’s one ‘fun fact’ about you that not many people know?:

I have a twin sister (fraternal), Cathy, who is my best friend! She previously work at UCSF as a Clinical Research Coordinator, but switched over to a startup late last year.

What do you like to do when you’re not at work?:

I love spending time with my parents, their sacrifice and support is the primary reason I am able to do what I love. I’ve also made an effort to stay active. I recently started running in the morning before work and it’s really help improve my concentration at work and overall mood.

If you could learn anything, what would that be?:

Right now, I’d love to learn how to cross-stitch, or how to change a flat tire. Or maybe how to use an abacus. There’s always some useful skills I can learn, you never know when you’ll need it.
